About Saul Folk Quest
open to all non-professional folk artists and bands

The ‘Saul Folk Quest’ is a search for up and coming folk talent devised by Al Best of EntsWeb.com and brought to life by a partnership between BBC Radio Gloucestershire, Saul Canal Festival’s Folk on the Water team and EntsWeb.com.

The joint venture is designed to help budding folk musicians to gain a foothold on the ladder to success. ’Saul Folk Quest' is an important project intended to be instrumental in opening doors for deserving but as yet, unknown folk artists.

The first ‘Saul Folk Quest’ competition was announced in April 2006 by Johnny Coppin on his BBC Radio Gloucestershire show "Folk Roots". Johnny’s show is the main vehicle for Saul Folk Quest and serves to keep everyone up to date on the progress of the Quest with weekly bulletins right up until the winner is announced.

The successful artist/band in 2006 benefited from:

  • Airtime on “Folk Roots” - Johnny Coppin's BBC Radio Gloucestershire programme broadcast every Sunday
  • A Saturday spot on the Folk on the Water main stage at Saul Canal Festival. June 30th to July 2nd 2006 www.junctionevents.org.uk
  • A year’s free advertising in the EntsWeb Directory
  • Featured artist/band status on the EW Folk Roots List web site
  • Half a day in a professional recording studio courtesy of DB Studios in Stroud

Entries to the Folk Quest are judged on standard of musicianship and overall impression by a panel made up of:

  • Johnny Coppin - singer-songwriter and presenter of Radio Gloucestershire’s 'Folk Roots’;
  • Jo Heatley , Saul Canal Festival’s Folk on the Water Music Director
  • Al Best former professional musician & agent and now CEO of EntsWeb.com
